The birth of DuVernay's daughter occurred on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay began to develop her artistic and creative talents when she was a young girl, thanks to Aunt Denise. The aunt she had was a nurse, who worked night shifts so that she could dedicate her time to literature, theatre, and art. DuVernay was a fan of the movie West Side Story, which she introduced to her. DuVernay learned by example that art could be a vehicle for activism. DuVernay's mother also had social consciousness and taught DuVernay to express herself via artwork. DuVernay was a child with her family in Compton and spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama in the family home of her father. Her father recalled the civil rights marches over the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the Selma town that was nearby, Alabama. The DuVernay family visited Selma over the summer months and was motivated to make a documentary about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. Upon graduation, DuVernay studied at the University of California Los Angeles and earned degrees both in English as well as African American study. DuVernay started producing for the broadcast industry while she was in her university. DuVernay was an intern at CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembered being told to examine the garbage of a jury member's home. The duties she was required to accomplish left her unsatisfied which is why, when she decided to not pursue the field of journalism, she was able to move into the industry of publicity. DuVernay began her career as a junior public relations assistant for a film studio that was small, right after graduating from the college. Her first venture was The DuVernay Agency, her PR firm, in 1999.
